Strategic BDS campaigns are building mass public support and having a real impact.

BDS movement’s theory of change: 

The BDS movement understands that the Israeli regime of settler-colonialism, apartheid and military occupation against Palestinians derives its strength primarily from the complicity and support of governments, corporations and institutions. Our theory of change, then, can be summed up as building sufficient power – people power at the grassroots, cultural, academic and civil society levels – to: 

(1) end corporate and institutional complicity, and 

(2) influence the policymaking level to ultimately end state complicity in Israel’s system of oppression.

Relocate the Race

The Giro d’Italia cycling race, second only to the Tour de France in prestige, is set to have an Israel start, May 4-7, 2018. Israel is reportedly paying €10 million to host the Giro as part of its propaganda efforts, mimicking those of the apartheid regime in South Africa, to use sports to hide, or sports-wash, its decades-long military occupation and apartheid system imposed on the Palestinian people. Giro d'Italia is actively aiding the Israeli government in falsely portraying occupied East Jerusalem as part of Israel and its “unified capital,” something the international community does not recognize. The Giro will be a key event in Israel’s “celebrations” for the 70th anniversary of the founding of the state, when pre-state militias and later the Israeli army forced approximately 800,000 indigenous Palestinians, Muslims and Christians, from their homeland. Just as it would have been unacceptable for the Giro d’Italia to start from apartheid South Africa in the 1980s, it is unacceptable to start the race in Israel as it will only serve as a stamp of approval for Israel’s oppression of Palestinians. This campaign calls on Giro d’Italia to relocate the race from Israel to avoid covering up Israel’s violations of international law and Palestinian human rights.

Boycott Eurovision 2019

Israel is expected to host the Eurovision Song Contest in May 2019, following Netta Barzilai’s win at the 2018 edition. Israel is shamelessly using Eurovision as part of its official Brand Israel strategy, which presents  “Israel’s prettier face” to whitewash and distract attention from its war crimes against Palestinians. Israel massacred 62 Palestinians in Gaza, including six children just two days after its 2018 Eurovision win. That same evening, Netta Barzilai performed a celebratory concert in Tel Aviv, hosted by the mayor, and said, “We have a reason to be happy.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called Barzilai “the best ambassador of Israel,” underlining his far-right government’s art-washing agenda.  Palestinians have called on EBU members to boycott Eurovision 2019 if hosted by Israel, regardless of its location.
