On the 100th Day of the Arrest of Human Rights Defender Ramy Shaath: Take Action to Release Him

Ramy Shaath is a political and human rights activist and co-founder of BDS Egypt who holds both Palestinian and Egyptian nationalities. Egyptian security forces arrested him on the 5th of July 2019 and deported his wife, Celine Lebrun-Shaath, illegally and coercively. Through his political work, Ramy promotes support for the Palestinian struggle in Egypt. He has consistently condemned Israeli violations of Palestinian rights and opposed normalization with Israel’s regime of occupation, settler-colonialism and apartheid.

Amnesty International has released a statement that considers Ramy Shaath to be “a prisoner of conscience, as his detention stems solely from the peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of expression and his right to participate in public affairs,” and calls for his immediate release.

Today is Ramy’s 100th day in detention, which has been renewed eight times to date.

In the last few months hundreds of activists have been arrested in Egypt due to their peaceful organising. We call for their immediate release.

This month is the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) for Egypt in Geneva which aims to improve the human rights situation on the ground of each of the 193 United Nations (UN) Member States. You can help release Ramy by sending the following letter, signed by 30 Palestinian civil society organizations, to the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights Michelle Bachelet:
