Chester FC Drops Puma Sponsorship Amid Growing Boycott Campaign

Chester F.C yesterday announced they are ditching their long term kit supplier amid a growing international campaign to #BoycottPuma. The sportswear manufacturer is rapidly becoming a toxic brand over its complicity with Israeli war crimes, and Chester F.C previously indicated – in response to thousands of messages received – that they would not renew their contract after this season. Chester FC had earlier cited “ethical working practices" among its selection criteria for sponsors. PSC welcomes the club’s confirmation that Kappa will take over as kit provider from June 2020 onwards.

Thousands of supporters have written to Chester F.C in recent weeks, with the hashtag #BoycottPuma generated over a million twitter impressions during a match last month.

PSC’s Campaigns Officer, James Tuite, said:

Puma’s sponsorship of the Israel Football Association directly sustains illegal settlements and the suffering of Palestinian communities. Sport should be used for good, but instead Puma continues to use its brand legitimising Israeli war crimes. Now is the time to show complicity has consequences, and we urge all sports clubs to boycott Puma.

Puma has faced intensifying criticism over its sponsorship of the Israel Football Association (IFA), which – as documented by Human Rights Watch – includes football clubs based in illegal Israeli settlement. All settlements are considered war crimes under international law.
