* English:

In his critique of French—and European—colonialism of Algeria, across Africa, and many nations in the Caribbean and around the world, Frantz Fanon described one of the profound aspects of colonialism as a “systematic negation of the [colonized native] person and a furious determination to deny the other person all attributes of humanity.” In a recent reminder of this powerful description, the president of the Arab World Institute/Institut du Monde Arabe (IMA) in Paris, Jack Lang, attacked more than 250 Arab intellectual and cultural figures as “sheep” for signing a petition condemning the institute’s attempts to normalize Israel’s regime of settler-colonialism and apartheid in the Arab region and in Arab culture.

The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) condemns Lang’s statement, which manifests a white supremacist ideology and recalls the dark era of direct French colonialism around the world.

Significantly, PACBI sees Lang’s racist attack as a desperate attempt to divert attention from the irrefutable facts cited in the Arab intellectuals’ petition. These include Lang’s own promotion of Donald Trump’s “Abraham Accords” between authoritarian Arab regimes and Israel’s apartheid regime, and IMA’s attempt to impose Israel and its complicit institutions in a cultural space that is supposed to celebrate Arab culture with its diverse components, including its Jewish-Arab dimension.

The petition, signed by prominent Arab figures, including Jewish-Arab figures, is accurate in stating that the institute “betrays its intellectual mission by adopting this normalization approach — one of the worst forms of coercive and immoral political abuse of art as a tool to legitimize colonialism and oppression.”

Instead of escaping from confronting these facts about IMA’s normalization tendency by launching a racist attack on its rightful critics, it would have been worthier for IMA’s president to abandon this tendency that harms the institute’s important role in embracing and promoting Arab culture. Most importantly, Mr. Lang must recognize that this anti-normalization petition is inspired by Angela Davis when she says, “I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.”
