In a letter sent to the chief of EU foreign policy Catherine Ashton, 23 members of European Parliament called for the suspention of EU-Israel Association Agreement.

It is very unique that such a significant, cross-party initiative has been taken by MEP`s to call outright for suspention of the Association Agreement.

In their letter MEP`s stated that:

“The Agreement is based on mutual respect for human rights and democratic principles, as explicitly stated in article 2 of the Agreement.

On October 23rd the European Parliament adopted the EU-Israel ACAA trade agreement by 379 votes to 230, with 41 abstentions despite the escalation of Israel’s illegal settlement policies and the entrenchment of its occupation of Palestinian lands. The vote was prompted by last month’s decision of the International Trade committee which, by a single vote, decided to oppose a further suspension of the agreement.

The European Coordination of Committees and Associations for Palestine joins the European Network Against Arms Trade, in its support to the appeal of the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee (BNC) for an international military embargo of Israel.

This appeal, already endorsed by Nobel Peace Prize winners Desmond Tutu, Mairead Maguire, Rigoberta Menchú and Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, was released by the BNC, a coalition encompassing all Palestinian political parties, trade unions, NGOs and mass organisations
