Across the World, Groups Pledge #NoRestForPUMA Until It Ends Complicity in Israeli Apartheid
Across the globe, the world of sports stood with the more than 200 Palestinian teams calling to boycott PUMA and thousands of leaflets were distributed at PUMA shops and vendors.
On Saturday, September 10, groups around the world participated in the #BoycottPUMA Global Day of Action, calling on the German sportswear company to end its complicity in Israeli apartheid.
Ahead of the day of action, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign picketed PUMA’s greenwashing conference on “sustainability” in London on September 6. Activists distributed leaflets on PUMA’s complicity in Israel’s war crimes against Palestinians and the need for an intersectional approach to climate justice for all that is consistent with respect for human rights. Showing itself to be a true greenwasher that is scared of the truth about its complicity being revealed, PUMA forced attendees to hand over leaflets before entering!
In an extraordinary act of solidarity with Palestinians, a group of queer and trans artists announced on September 8 that they had turned down well-compensated collaboration offers with PUMA for its Pride campaign. The organization that the artists work with, Queer|Art, released its own statement standing with the artists and endorsing “the thoughtful, hopeful, and principled Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement to end Israeli occupation, settler-colonialism, and apartheid.”
On social media, @PUMA’s mentions turned green and pink as supporters of true justice for all called out PUMA’s greenwashing and its support for Israeli apartheid, and thanked queer and trans artists for their selfless act in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for freedom, justice and equality.
The hashtags #BoycottPUMA and #قاطعوا_بوما had a reach of 15 million.
A coalition of major trade union confederations and civil society groups in Mauritius urged @PUMA's main vendor to drop PUMA over its complicity in Israeli apartheid.
The Palestinian football club Lajee Celtic in the Aida refugee camp in the occupied West Bank sent a powerful letter to Cliftonville FC in Belfast urging the club to drop PUMA. “You have options. PUMA has options. We have none - other than to ask for your support."
Across the globe, the world of sports stood with the more than 200 Palestinian teams calling to boycott PUMA. A #BoycottPUMA futsal tournament was held in Kuala Lumpur, with 30 teams participating, and a #BoycottPUMA football cup took place in Manchester. The Easton Cowfolk FC played a solidarity match outside a PUMA vendor in Bristol. Activists distributed leaflets at the Olympique de Marseille match over the club’s sponsorship by PUMA. Fans of Clapton Community FC held banners during a match. Clapton CFC endorsed the Boycott PUMA campaign and declared itself an Apartheid Free Zone last year.
The island of Inis Oirr, Ireland, mobilized a huge turn out in solidarity with Palestinians and the call to boycott PUMA.
Thousands of leaflets were distributed at PUMA shops and vendors in cities across the UK, France and Japan, Switzerland, Austria and Germany.
