300 Palestinian Sports Clubs and Civil Society Organizations: #BanIsrael from the Olympics
We the undersigned, Palestinian sports clubs and youth centers, and Palestinian civil society organizations, call on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to apply its principles and fulfill its obligations by banning Israel from the next Olympic Games to be held in Paris in July 2024, until it ends its grave violations of international law, particularly its system of apartheid and its ongoing genocide in Gaza.
For more than three months, Israel has been waging a genocidal war against 2.3 million Palestinians in the occupied and besieged Gaza, including tens of thousands of athletes, fans and followers of the Olympic Games. In the face of this televised genocide, there is no longer any excuse for international sporting or non-sporting bodies to not expel Israel, or at a minimum suspend its membership. To allow Israel, in the midst of a genocide, to participate in the upcoming Olympic games would signal to the international community that the IOC approves of the gravest of war crimes.
Based on the Olympic principles, the resolutions of the United Nations and the Islamic Cooperation Council and the Arab League, and international conferences and conventions, particularly those related to the crimes of apartheid and genocide, we call on the Olympic committees in the Arab region, the Global South, and friendly states in the West to join us and demand Israel be banned from the next Olympic games.
We also appeal to the sports communities and sports fans and activists in the Arab region, the Global South, and around the world to adopt our demand and pressure the IOC to ban Israel through effective means, including the peaceful disruption of meetings and gatherings in preparation for the Olympic Games.
Over the years, the Palestinian sports sector has suffered and continues to suffer from gross Israeli violations of human rights and the right to practice sports. Israeli violations include the establishment of illegal settlements on stolen Palestinian lands which includes establishing settler-only sports clubs and stadiums on those lands; bombing and destroying Palestinian stadiums; storming sports clubs and obstructing matches; confiscating sports equipment; denying Palestinian athletes their freedom of movement to attend practices or matches; restricting the development of sports clubs in occupied Jerusalem; and targeting Palestinian athletes and killing them or causing disabilities that deprive them of sports forever. In the midst of its ongoing genocide, Israel killed the Palestinian Olympic football team coach, Captain Hani Al Masdar, and destroyed the office of the Palestinian Olympic committee in Gaza.
The Olympic Charter clearly obliges the IOC to “respect … internationally recognised human rights and universal fundamental ethical principles within the remit of the Olympic Movement.” Yet, we have not seen the IOC take any responsibility towards ending or sanctioning Israel’s grave human rights violations perpetrated against Palestinian athletes and the Palestinian sports infrastructure.
The IOC applies the principle of political neutrality in a hypocritical and selective manner based on the global political context and the interests of the colonial powers that dominate it. For instance, the IOC promptly called for sports solidarity with Ukraine following Russia’s invasion, imposing comprehensive sanctions on Russian sports bodies and Russian athletes. In contrast, when it comes to Israel’s decades-old system of military occupation and apartheid, the IOC imposes the harshest penalties not on Israel but on the sports federations and individual athletes who dare to speak out against Israel’s human rights abuses or who take moral stances in solidarity with Palestinians. Now, while Palestinians are being subjected to genocide in Gaza, the IOC is threatening any athlete or official who takes a moral position against Israeli crimes with “swift action”.
The IOC also ignores that the Israeli occupation army created a special status for “Olympic athlete” soldiers and grants them special privileges to ensure they can continue training and competing while also serving in the Israeli military. The Israeli military estimates that 150 Israeli Olympic athletes serve in the army.
The IOC President says: “We must be politically neutral but not apolitical. We know well that our decisions have political implications and we have to include that in our thinking.” We couldn’t agree more. In the case of Israel’s regime of settler-colonialism, apartheid and military occupation, not to mention its ongoing genocide against our people, failing to hold Israel accountable is in itself a political stance, one that entrenches its impunity to continue its carnage.
Throughout modern history, the decisions of “international” sports organizations such as the IOC, International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), and others have played a decisive role in putting an end to human rights violations and crimes against humanity around the world. The most prominent example was the role that sports sanctions and the global sports boycott played in dismantling the apartheid regime in South Africa. However, reading history also shows that these moral decisions were not readily taken. Back then, international sports organizations also invoked the principle of neutrality and separating sports from politics to resist the calls for sanctioning apartheid. However, the global pressure of the Anti- Apartheid Movement, followed by pressure from the organizations’ members, particularly in the Global South, threatened the interests of these international sports organizations, eventually prompting them to impose sanctions on the apartheid regime.
We stand with those protesting the Paris games for imposing environmentally damaging infrastructure on the French colony Tahiti, for displacing the city’s unhoused and migrants, and for using the games as a laboratory for AI-powered intrusive surveillance.
These Western-dominated bodies that claim to be global only understand the language of pressure. United in calls for justice, we have a lot of people power to apply the needed pressure to end the IOC’s complicity and hypocrisy. If not now, when?

Appel palestinien au CIO pour l'exclusion d'Israël aux prochains Jeux olympiques
Nous soussignés, clubs sportifs et centres de jeunesse palestiniens, et organisations de la société civile palestinienne, appelons le Comité international olympique (CIO) à appliquer ses principes et à remplir ses obligations en bannissant Israël des prochains Jeux olympiques qui se tiendront à Paris en juillet 2024, jusqu'à ce qu'Israël mette fin à ses graves violations du droit international, en particulier à son système d'apartheid et à son génocide en cours dans la bande de Gaza.
Depuis plus de trois mois, Israël mène une guerre génocidaire contre 2,3 millions de Palestinien.ne.s dans la bande de Gaza occupée et assiégée, dont des dizaines de milliers d'athlètes, de supporter.trice.s et de personnes qui suivent les Jeux olympiques. Face à ce génocide télévisé, les organisations sportives et non sportives internationales n'ont plus aucune excuse pour ne pas expulser Israël ou, au minimum, suspendre sa participation. Permettre à Israël, en plein génocide, de participer aux prochains Jeux olympiques serait un message à la communauté internationale que le CIO approuve le plus grave des crimes de guerre.
Sur la base des principes olympiques, des résolutions des Nations unies, du Conseil de coopération islamique et de la Ligue arabe, ainsi que des conférences et conventions internationales, en particulier celles relatives aux crimes d'apartheid et de génocide, nous appelons les comités olympiques de la région arabe, du Sud global et des États amis de l'Occident à se joindre à nous et à exiger qu'Israël soit banni des prochains Jeux olympiques.
Nous appelons également les communautés sportives, les amateur.trice.s de sport et les activistes de la région arabe, du Sud et du monde entier à adopter notre demande et à faire pression sur le CIO pour qu'il interdise Israël par des moyens efficaces, notamment en perturbant pacifiquement les réunions et les rassemblements organisés en vue des Jeux olympiques.
Au fil des ans, le secteur sportif palestinien a souffert et continue de souffrir des violations israéliennes flagrantes des droits humains et du droit de pratiquer le sport. Les violations israéliennes comprennent l'établissement de colonies illégales sur des terres palestiniennes volées, ce qui inclut l'établissement de clubs sportifs et de stades réservés aux colons sur ces terres ; le bombardement et la destruction de stades palestiniens ; la prise d'assaut de clubs sportifs et l'obstruction de matchs ; la confiscation d'équipements sportifs ; la privation de liberté de mouvement des athlètes palestinien.ne.s pour assister à des entraînements ou à des matchs ; la restriction du développement de clubs sportifs dans la partie occupée de Jérusalem ; et la prise pour cible d'athlètes palestinien.ne.s, les tuant ou leur causant des handicaps qui les privent à jamais de la pratique du sport. Dans le cadre de son génocide en cours, Israël a tué l'entraîneur de l'équipe olympique palestinienne de football, le capitaine Hani Al Masdar, et a détruit le bureau du Comité olympique palestinien à Gaza.
La Charte olympique oblige clairement le CIO à "respecter [...] les droits humains internationalement reconnus et les principes éthiques fondamentaux universels dans le cadre du Mouvement olympique". Pourtant, nous n'avons pas vu le CIO prendre la moindre responsabilité pour mettre fin ou sanctionner les graves violations des droits humains perpétrées par Israël à l'encontre des athlètes palestinien.ne.s et de l'infrastructure sportive palestinienne.
Le CIO applique le principe de neutralité politique de manière hypocrite et sélective en fonction du contexte politique mondial et des intérêts des puissances coloniales qui le dominent. Par exemple, le CIO a rapidement appelé à la solidarité sportive avec l'Ukraine à la suite de l'invasion russe, en imposant des sanctions globales aux organismes sportifs russes et aux athlètes russes. En revanche, lorsqu'il s'agit du système d'occupation militaire et d'apartheid mis en place par Israël depuis des décennies, le CIO impose les sanctions les plus sévères non pas à Israël, mais aux fédérations sportives et aux athlètes individuels qui osent dénoncer les violations des droits humains commises par Israël ou qui adoptent des positions morales de solidarité avec les Palestinien.ne.s. Aujourd'hui, alors que les Palestinien.ne.s sont victimes d'un génocide à Gaza, le CIO menace d'une "action rapide" tout athlète ou officiel qui prendrait une position morale contre les crimes israéliens.
Le CIO ignore également que l'armée d'occupation israélienne a créé un statut spécial pour les soldats "athlètes olympiques" et leur accorde des privilèges particuliers afin qu'ils puissent continuer à s'entraîner et à concourir tout en servant dans l'armée israélienne. L'armée israélienne estime que 150 athlètes olympiques israélien.ne.s servent dans l'armée.
Le président du CIO déclare : "Nous devons être politiquement neutres, mais pas apolitiques. Nous savons bien que nos décisions ont des implications politiques et nous devons en tenir compte dans notre réflexion". Nous sommes tout à fait d'accord. Dans le cas du régime israélien de colonialisme, d'apartheid et d'occupation militaire, sans parler du génocide en cours contre notre peuple, ne pas demander des comptes à Israël est en soi une position politique, qui consacre l'impunité dont il jouit pour poursuivre son carnage.
Tout au long de l'histoire moderne, les décisions des organisations sportives "internationales" telles que le CIO, la Fédération internationale de football association (FIFA) et d'autres ont joué un rôle décisif pour mettre fin aux violations des droits humains et aux crimes contre l'humanité dans le monde entier. L'exemple le plus marquant est le rôle que les sanctions sportives et le boycott sportif mondial ont joué dans le démantèlement du régime d'apartheid en Afrique du Sud. Cependant, la lecture de l'Histoire montre également que ces décisions morales n'ont pas été prises d'emblée. À l'époque, les organisations sportives internationales ont également invoqué le principe de neutralité et de séparation du sport et de la politique pour résister aux appels à sanctionner l'apartheid. Cependant, la pression mondiale du mouvement anti-apartheid, suivie par la pression des membres des organisations, en particulier dans le Sud, a menacé les intérêts de ces organisations sportives internationales, les incitant finalement à imposer des sanctions au régime de l'apartheid.
Nous nous joignons à ceux et celles qui protestent contre les Jeux de Paris, qui imposent des infrastructures nuisibles à l'environnement à la « colonie française de Tahiti », qui déplacent les sans-abri et les migrant.e.s de la ville, et qui utilisent les Jeux comme un laboratoire pour la surveillance intrusive par l'IA (intelligence artificielle).
Ces organismes dominés par l'Occident qui prétendent être mondiaux ne comprennent que le langage de la pression. Uni.e.s dans nos appels à la justice, nous avons le pouvoir d'exercer la pression nécessaire pour mettre fin à la complicité et à l'hypocrisie du CIO. Si ce n'est pas maintenant, quand ?
