As Carrefour shareholders prepare to meet on 22 May at the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), the message from the growing #BoycottCarrefour BDS campaign is clear: complicity in Israel’s regime of genocide, apartheid and illegal occupation comes at a rising ethical, reputational and financial cost.
Carrefour’s complicity is deepening through direct partnership with Israel’s genocidal government.
Carrefour is no longer merely operating in apartheid Israel; it is increasingly embedded in complicit state-backed projects as Israel escalates settlement expansion, ethnic cleansing, and genocide against Palestinians. Businesses have a legal responsibility to end all complicity in Israel’s crimes against Palestinians, while corporations, as well as their board of directors and executives may face criminal liability for their complicity in war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
Through the “Israeli Basket” project launched in cooperation with Israel’s Ministry of Economy, Carrefour has become a central partner in a state-backed economic initiative, which took effect on 15 April. Under the plan, Carrefour offers discounts on specific products, with the Israeli government providing a subsidy of 50 million shekels (around $17 million).
The initiative, which is accompanied by a massive state-funded promotional campaign, further integrates Carrefour into Israel’s official government policy.
Since the start of Israel’s ongoing genocide against 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza, Carrefour Israel’s support has escalated from distributing care packages to Israeli soldiers to directly supplying food and beverages to Israeli state institutions, including Israel’s war ministry, in 2024.
Despite Carrefour’s public denials of operating in Israel’s illegal settlements, recent reports published by the UN, Who Profits, DBIO and AFPS document the company’s continued expansion on illegally occupied Palestinian land, including branches in occupied Jerusalem.
But the cost of this complicity is increasingly visible.
Carrefour Group’s net profit fell sharply in 2025, dropping by nearly 56% (from €723 million in 2024 to €319 million in 2025). Financial analysts pointed to rising integration costs, investor concerns, regional instability and growing operational pressures affecting the group’s performance. Meanwhile, Carrefour continues retreating from or restructuring operations across several markets.
The broader boycott campaign is also intensifying globally. Sustained BDS pressure has already forced Carrefour-linked operations out of Jordan, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait, while generating mounting reputational and commercial pressure on the company and its partners.
Carrefour is refocusing its global footprint on three core pillars—France, Spain, and Brazil—while further expanding its franchise model across the African continent. But the boycott is expanding there too.
From Brazil to Mauritius, from Ghana to France, and from Morocco to Senegal, organizers are joining the Global Week of Action from 18–24 May, escalating pressure ahead of Carrefour’s AGM. Around the world, activists, trade unions, grassroots groups and consumers are organizing protests, store actions, online mobilizations and public campaigns demanding that Carrefour end its complicity in Israel’s regime of settler colonialism, apartheid and genocide.
The BDS movement’s message to Carrefour shareholders is simple: complicity in genocide and apartheid is not just illegal and unethical–it is also bad for business.
As protests gather outside Carrefour’s global headquarters during the AGM, BDS groups and Palestine solidarity networks are escalating the campaign pressure. Join the growing campaign now:
- Organize or join local actions in pressuring the multinational French Carrefour to end its complicity in Israel’s crimes.
- Contact local stores, pressuring them to drop their franchise agreement with Carrefour, or at least raise concerns with the parent company about the campaign’s demands.
- Amplify the campaign online by using the hashtag #BoycottCarrefour and tagging Carrefour CEO, Alexandre Bompard.
- Escalate consumer boycott efforts.
The genocide has not stopped. Neither will we.
