In 1988, PM Thatcher banned local council boycotts and divestment against apartheid South Africa. Now, Boris Johnson plans to ban local council boycotts and divestment against apartheid Israel. It was wrong then, and it’s wrong now.

In 1988, Thatcher banned local councils from boycotting apartheid South Africa. Now Johnson wants to ban them from boycotting apartheid Israel. Supporters of human rights & freedom of expression should oppose this McCarthyite repression of our peaceful, anti-racist BDS movement.

Boris Johnson’s government, like the anti-Palestinian Trump administration, is more than ever directly engaged in Israel’s desperate war of repression on advocacy for Palestinian rights and on BDS in particular.

In 1988, PM Margaret Thatcher banned local councils from boycotts and divestment against apartheid South Africa. Now, Johnson is planning to ban local councils from boycotts and divestment against apartheid Israel. It was wrong then, and it’s wrong now.

Supporters of freedom of expression and human rights for all should oppose Johnson’s McCarthyite efforts to repress our peaceful movement for freedom, justice and equality.
