Over the course of Israel’s year-long live-streamed genocide against 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza, it has attacked the United Nations repeatedly. It has killed 228 UN staff members in Gaza—the highest number of UN personnel killed in any conflict since the creation of the UN.

Send a letter to the UNGA President: Suspend Israel from the UN Now!

The Israeli government is actively working to destroy the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), a UN agency providing essential services to millions of Palestinian refugees who are entitled to return to their land. Israel’s genocidal military has repeatedly and deliberately attacked UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon a dozen times, using white phosphorus in some attacks, as revealed recently.. It has destroyed UN infrastructure across the region, particularly in Gaza, including schools, warehouses and refugee camps

Israel’s outgoing ambassador desecrated the UN Charter by shredding a copy from the General Assembly podium, while calling for the UN Headquarters to be “wiped off the face of the Earth.” It has actively obstructed the work of the UN officials to investigate its crimes across historic Palestine by denying them entry, not just in the course of this genocide but for decades. It has also declared the UN Secretary General “persona non grata.”

Apartheid Israel fails the basic conditions of UN membership - it is anything but a peace-loving state and does neither accept nor carry out its obligations under the UN Charter and international law. Beyond its livestreamed genocide in Gaza and its outrageous attacks on the UN, Israel is perpetrating rolling massacres in Lebanon and escalating aggression against other states in the region. Commitment to the right of return of the Palestine refugees was a necessary condition for Israel’s admission to the UN in the first place. Yet, Israel has continued to escalate its policy of ethnic cleansing. Today, 9.17 million Palestinians, 64% of the entire Palestinian people, are refugees or displaced from their homes, while Israel denies them their inherent and UN-stipulated right of return and reparations.

For all this and much more, Israel must be kicked out of the UN. It is overdue that the UN Security Council under Article 6 of the UN Charter recommends to the UN General Assembly to withdraw Israel’s membership. Yet, in order to act, the General Assembly does not need to wait for the Security Council, chronically paralyzed by the veto of the US and other allies of apartheid and genocide.

A month ago, the UNGA overwhelmingly adopted a resolution enacting the July 2024 Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Israel’s unlawful occupation and apartheid against Palestinians. For the first time in 42 years, the UNGA called for imposing sanctions on Israel. The global majority affirmed that the historic ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) triggers the legal obligation of all states, the UN and its bodies as well as regional organizations to end complicity in Israel’s illegal occupation and apartheid regime.

This evokes the historic precedent from exactly 50 years ago, when the UN General Assembly suspended apartheid South Africa. Just as in the case of Israel, the UN Security Council protected South Africa’s regime despite all crimes, but the General Assembly effectively suspended it from the UN proceedings recognizing that an apartheid state maintaining an illegal occupation lacks international legitimacy and representativity of the people under its control.

Today, with the continued complicity of the West, led by the US, Israel’s genocide in Gaza takes new horrific turns everyday – most recently burning patients and displaced Palestinians alive. Its bloody aggression in the occupied West Bank including East Jerusalem is intensifying. The apartheid and genocidal regime is plunging the region towards an all-out war.

This can only be stopped if we push our leaders and governments to take concrete action.

Join us today in writing to the President of the UNGA, Philémon Yang, urging him to enact the resolution sanctioning Israel by suspending it from the UN!

Let’s remind the institution of its responsibility!
