#UNGA77: Email UN officials now and demand #UNinvestigateApartheid!

UNGA e-action mailer

The 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will begin in New York on Tuesday, 13th September, with representatives of governments from around the world. Now is our chance to ensure they hear the global call for a UN-led investigation of Israeli apartheid.

Decades of resistance on the ground and international solidarity, coupled with measures taken by the UN, helped confine apartheid in South Africa to the dustbin of history. The UN imposed a military embargo and called on all states to end military, economic, cultural and diplomatic relations with apartheid South Africa.

For decades, Palestinian civil society and solidarity groups have analyzed Israel’s settler-colonial regime as including apartheid against the entire Indigenous Palestinian people. Today, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, B’Tselem, and 100’s of global institutions, experts, leaders and an increasing number of UN member states join the global consensus - Israel is guilty of the crime against humanity of apartheid.

Palestinians are enduring and resisting an ongoing Nakba of ethnic cleansing, land theft and massacres. Most recently, during its 3-day bombardment of Gaza, apartheid Israel murdered 49+ Palestinians including 18 children.

Our South Africa moment is nearing. Stand with us as we make history; your support can help #EndIsraeliApartheid.

Subject: Activate UN Mechanisms to End Israeli Apartheid

State representatives will convene in the coming months for the United Nations General Assembly’s 77th session to deliberate on the most important questions of world peace and development based on justice, equality and the human rights of all nations.

In the past, this very forum has taken concrete and decisive steps in defence of justice, equality and self-determination. In 1962, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning apartheid policies in South Africa, with a Special Committee against Apartheid constituted the following year. In 1963, the UNGA called for an arms embargo on South Africa, which the Security Council made mandatory in 1977. These steps contributed to the multi-faceted struggle against apartheid, including a global boycott and divestment campaign. Together, these efforts led to the end of the apartheid regime.

Today, we demand that the UN take an equally unequivocal stance against Israel’s apartheid. Palestinian civil society and solidarity groups have for decades recognized that Israel is imposing a system of apartheid against the entire Palestinian people and called for targeted, lawful sanctions to help dismantle it. Today, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the largest Israeli human rights NGO, B’Tselem, join these calls for a UN investigation and adoption of effective measures of accountability.

UN experts, including consecutive Special Rapporteurs on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory and former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, have also arrived at this conclusion.

State representatives of South Africa and Namibia - formerly under apartheid, in addition to a growing number of states have recognized the situation as apartheid and called for accountability measures in the Human Rights Council.

It is past time for the UNGA to take concrete measures to investigate, condemn and dismantle Israel’s apartheid, beginning with a military embargo. We urge you, as office bearers of this institution, to convey our message and support the struggle for justice, freedom and equality and to end this 21st-century apartheid.

Sincerely,

Activate UN Mechanisms to End Israeli Apartheid
